June is Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Awareness Month
June is recognized as Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Awareness Month in Canada. To highlight the conditions and celebrate those living with the conditions, HC and other spina bifida and hydrocephalus organizations across Canada have encouraged our communities to raise awareness through various activities and fundraising campaigns. Throughout the month, various initiatives and events were organized to raise awareness, educate the public and support individuals living with the conditions. 2022 was all about encouraging people in the spina bifida and hydrocephalus communities to share their stories.
Connected with Us:
The community took part in our Hugs for Hydrocephalus and Smiles for Spina Bifida photo/video awareness social media campaign. SB&H organizations in Alberta, Quebec and Ontario participated in submitting photos/videos of individuals hugging or smiling with their family members/friends that live with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus. Photos submitted from across Canada shared their powerful stories and showed their incredible support. The winning photo of the contest is featured on the cover of our annual report.
Blue Wave Across Canada:
We are happy to share that HC had iconic landmarks across the country light up in HC colours to shine a spotlight on the se conditions that affect so many Canadians. For the first time, we illuminated the CN Tower in Toronto and Niagara Falls in the Niagara Region in blue and green. The High Level Bridge in Edmonton was also lit up in green. Our hope was to be more visible in communities. Together, we can create a brighter future for all!
Ready, Set, Go!
In addition to delivering amazing events, we challenged everyone to join us in walking, rolling and running to collect kilometers (km’s) in the month of June. Provinces competed against each other to see who could rack up the most km’s collectively and earn bragging rights. We encouraged you, your friends, community members and family to get moving for SB&H! Together we covered 2483 km’s with 155 participants in Canada.
Overall, June Awareness Month for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus witnessed significant efforts in spreading awareness, raising funds, providing educational resources, and fostering a supportive community. These collective endeavors aimed to improve the lives of individuals with the conditions, promote inclusivity, and advocate for better healthcare and opportunities for those affected by the condition.
