Dr. Rano Matta is a reconstructive urologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto in Canada. He completed medical school at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and urology residency at the University of Toronto. Subsequently he completed fellowships in pediatric urology, genitourinary injury and reconstructive urology at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. 

He has a Master of Science in epidemiology from the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto where his research focus was on functional urology and prostate cancer survivorship. Dr. Matta’s clinical and academic focus are care for adult patients with congenital urologic disease, genitourinary reconstruction for cancer survivors, and urethral stricture disease.

Dr. Amoozegar is a Neurologist and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Calgary.  She completed undergraduate studies and her medical training at the University of Calgary, followed by a neurology residency at the University of Ottawa.  She then returned to Calgary and completed subspecialty training in the area of Headache and Facial pain with Dr. Werner Becker.  Over the next few years, her interest in clinical research led her to complete a Masters Degree in Clinical Epidemiology.

Currently, Dr. Amoozegar practices as a neurologist and headache subspecialist at the University of Calgary and the Calgary Headache Assessment and Management Program.  In addition to clinical practice, she is heavily involved in clinical research, including investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials, cohort studies, and registries.  She is also involved in teaching of fellows, residents and medical students in various settings.

 A progressive web app designed to centralize accessibility information for event venues and enhance access to live events for individuals with impaired mobility.

  • Jocelyn Kuntsi: A second-year Engineering Physics and Management student at McMaster University, Jocelyn is passionate about using STEM for social good and values her role in the WheelBeats team.

  • Maria Akhtar: Also a second-year Software Engineering student at McMaster University, Maria is driven by her enthusiasm for programming and design to advance accessibility through WheelBeats.

  • Cate Prince: As a second-year Mechanical Engineering student at McMaster University, Cate combines her skills in programming and design to make a real-world impact through the WheelBeats project.

  • Shayaha Jeyaseelan: A second-year Software Engineering student at McMaster University, Shayaha is dedicated to solving problems and improving the world through her work on WheelBeats.

We are thrilled to welcome our guest speakers, mother-daughter advocates Amy and Emma St. Aubin.


Meet Amy St. Aubin
Amy is a dedicated parent and passionate advocate for the hydrocephalus community. Living in the Niagara Region with her husband Jeff, daughter Emma, and son Shawn, Amy actively contributes to Hydrocephalus Canada as a Parent Link and Board Member. She will share her journey from being a first-time parent of a child with hydrocephalus to navigating the transition into adult care. Amy’s story is filled with challenges, growth, and the importance of self-care. She hopes to inspire other parents to keep advocating, connecting, and thriving!

Meet Emma St. Aubin
Emma, a 20-year-old from Niagara, is in her second year of the Child Health program at Brock University and a member of the Med Plus program. Despite facing health challenges from hydrocephalus and recent spinal CSF leaks, Emma continues to persevere. She loves spending time with her friends and her dog Jase. Staying connected with the SB&H community has been a pillar of support for Emma, and she is excited to share her journey with all of you.

The Quest for Health Information Resources by Young Adults with Disabilities: Building Theory

Beth has been a nurse for over 35 years. She worked in acute areas (orthopedic surgery, general medicine, bone marrow transplant) at The Hospital for Sick Children. She also worked in rehabilitation (complex continuing care) at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Beth was also a research associate at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Projects included a WHO cross-national study about health behaviours in school-aged children with disabilities and healthy transitions (funding approx. $250,000), clinical care pathways, family systems nursing (funding approx. $24,000), and client and family satisfaction with services. Beth was also a Director of Clinical Education at the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto.

Beth earned her B.A. in social sciences from the University of Western Ontario, her B.A.A. (Nursing) from Ryerson Polytechnic University, her M.Sc. from the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto, and her Ph.D. in public health sciences from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto.

Beth received numerous awards. These included two Bloorview Children’s Hospital Foundation Awards for exemplary care and career dedication to people with disabilities, three Ontario Graduate Scholarships, RNAO Foundation Graduate Fellowship, University of Toronto Open Master’s Fellowship, and Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society Award for best research poster.

Beth co-presented research at conferences, for example, American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine and Health Care in a Complex World: An International Research Conference. She co-published in numerous peer-reviewed journals including Disability & Society and Health Promotion International.

Outside professional and academic pursuits, Beth served on volunteer initiatives in daycares, public schools, and religious school. She enjoys quality time with family and friends, caring for her rescue dog, Pandora, and hot yoga and fitness.

 

 

 

 

Ghofran Alyass is a disabled woman with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and is the Founder of Beyond Abilities International, formerly known as Beyond Abilities. She holds a Master of Education in Social Justice Education specializing in Disability educational policy from OISE, University of Toronto She also holds an honor Bachelor of Arts in Disability Studies from the Toronto Metropolitan University, a college certificate in preparatory in Liberal Studies, and a college diploma in Community Services from George Brown College. She is a disability advocate, program facilitator, and the author of a recent book entitled “You Have 24 Hours to Live”.
