Our Mission
Hydrocephalus Canada connects the spina bifida and hydrocephalus communities through support, education, awareness, and research. We aim to improve lives by funding research that leads to better treatments, technologies, and understanding of these complex conditions.
Research Priorities
We support research focused on:
Improved and alternative shunt technologies
Faster diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus
Shunt function testing and management
Causes of congenital hydrocephalus
Long-term social and cognitive outcomes
Incontinence and infection management
Youth mental health and social isolation
Genetic research related to spina bifida in mothers
Effects of aging with hydrocephalus or spina bifida
What We Offer
Hydrocephalus Canada assists researchers by:
Promoting projects via newsletters and social media
Supporting participant recruitment and collaboration
Providing letters of support to funders
Offering small grants (up to $20,000 annually)
Supporting medical student research (CREMS Award – U of T)
Grant Details
Annual Deadline: September 30, 2025
Funding Amount: Up to $20,000 per project
Eligibility: Principal/co-investigators must be Canadian citizens or affiliated with a Canadian institution. Physicians must be based in or affiliated with a Toronto hospital or university.
Use of Funds: Supports personnel, materials, data collection, and analysis. Equipment-only requests are not eligible.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit:
Completed application form
150–200 word lay summary of the project
Research proposal (incl. objectives, methodology, budget, and ethics approval)
CVs of principal/co-investigators
Letters of collaboration (if applicable)
Proof of other funding (if applicable)
Reporting & Acknowledgement
Grantees are required to:
Submit a progress report at 6 months and a final scientific report (within 90 days of completion)
Provide a 500+ word lay summary for public use
Acknowledge Hydrocephalus Canada in all related publications and presentations
Request written permission to use the organization’s name or logo in print or media
Ethics & Governance
Reviewers must disclose any potential conflict of interest
Confidentiality is required for all committee members and reviewers
Hydrocephalus Canada reserves the right to approve or deny applications at its discretion
