Special Recognition Volunteer Awards

The Board of Directors of SB&H recognized the following dedicated volunteers at our Annual General Meeting on September 24, 2016 for service above and beyond what was asked.

Laura Smy, PhD: Firstly, we congratulate Dr. Smy on recently receiving her doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Toronto. Dr. Smy has been a regular volunteer with the Association for several years assisting staff with evaluating, updating, and reorganizing resource materials and articles of a social, educational, and scientific nature.  Laura helps with other duties such as preparing responses to inquiries of a medical or scientific nature, editing website and pamphlet content on folic acid, or preparing mail outs and contacting health care professionals for awareness campaigns.  Dr. Smy is being awarded the SB&H Citation of Merit for her outstanding dedication to the Association.

Larry McDonald: In 2015, Mr. McDonald took it upon himself to organize a walk and fish dinner in support of the SB&H in honour of two local individuals affected by the conditions. This walk exemplified small town Ontario support for a cause at its best, involving many of the businesses in town as well as the local Scout troupe, with more than 50 walkers and over a 100 supporters at the dinner. The 2015 and 2016 walks and dinners raised a combined total nearly $10,000 for SB&H programs and services. Larry, we thank you for your tireless efforts and outstanding commitment to make these community events such a success.

Laura Booth: Ms. Booth is the recipient of the SB&H Special Recognition award for her dedicated support and outstanding contribution to the Association and people living with sbh.  For many years Laura has volunteered to assist with data entry, research and a variety of office activities.  Ms. Booth was unable to attend today, but sent her heartfelt thanks for being honoured with this award.

Barb Siddall: Ms. Siddall has volunteered her time to raise awareness of spina bifida through the local walk in June, a float in the Santa Claus Parade in December and buy selling TGIF Lottery calendars in her community of Wheatley.

Carrie and Steven Shurr: This amazing duo have raised awareness of sbh in their community of Parry Sound through various fundraising initiatives for many years. Carrie and Steven continue to raise money for SB&H each year and are always ready to lend a hand. Steven has been a contributing artist to our TGIF Lottery Calendars.  Thank you both for all you do for the Association.

Monique & Marianka Cantin: This mother and daughter team have raised the level of awareness of spina bifida and hydrocephalus in their community of Hearst since 2007.  Marianka is a talented artist who has contributed works to several calendars and is the December artist for 2017. Each year they sell the TGIF Lottery Calendar to family and friends and have been top sellers for the last 3 years.
