WHAT IS HYDROCEPHALUS CANADA AND WHAT HAPPENED TO SB&H?

In November of 2017 the Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario (SB&H) began a process of change. We became Hydrocephalus Canada (HC), after supporting families, individuals and healthcare professionals in Ontario for more than 40 years as The Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario.

Hydrocephalus Canada incorporates the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario (SB&H). As Hydrocephalus Canada, the new association continues to offer the same valued programs and services that the Ontario community relies upon. But more than that, we are expanding our mandate to include the growing number of people across Canada living with hydrocephalus and Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

This national expansion will strengthen the growing community of people living with hydrocephalus and enable us to better support advances in treatment for hydrocephalus and related neurological conditions such as spina bifida, the sharing of education and knowledge, and standards of care. Our mission is to offer strength and support for people living with hydrocephalus and related neurological conditions, and to contribute to awareness and research. At the same time, we will work to find a cure.

The new association will build on the legacy of SB&H in Ontario and use our experience, knowledge and drive to outreach, offer useful information and support for members, and share relevant research and treatment news across medical communities, academia, associations, and industry partners, provincially, nationally and globally.

We are looking for two individuals to work in our offices in Etobicoke. To qualify for the program, you need to be between the ages of 15 and 30. You must also have been a full time student in the 2017-17 academic year and MUST be returning to school full time for the 2018-19 academic year.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS

 

Community Engagement and Outreach Assistant

Reporting: This summer position will report to the Information and Services Coordinator

Description: The students filling this position will learn valuable lessons in health promotion and community support. They will assist staff to increase public and stakeholder awareness of the conditions and the benefits, sources and proper use of folic acid and Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) education. We will also provide opportunities for them to contribute to marketing and implementation of our new brand and national outreach program. These activities will form the basis of ongoing initiatives to engage the public, people affected by spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus, and their caregivers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Students will familiarize themselves with our spina bifida, hydrocephalus and folic acid education and awareness.
  • Outreach to service providers who assist women of child bearing age with perinatal education to determine current needs for these educational resources.
  • Reach out to service providers who support individuals affected by spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus to provide condition specific information.
  • Liaise with staff in planning health promotion and community awareness events and effective distribution of event materials and resources.
  • Distribute folic acid and NPH educational materials to community service providers and the public.
  • Research opportunities for the association to provide educational displays, presentations, etc. in communities across Canada at health events such as pre-natal fairs, health fairs, senior’s fairs, etc.  Collate and chart results in Excel spreadsheet.
  • Assist in building content for “Youth” and Kidz Zone” areas of the Association website.
  • Assist with outreach regarding the Kidz & Youth Book Club.
  • Research opportunities for the Association to promote the hydrocephalus and spina bifida support groups for adults.
  • Assist with content for our social media outlets, ie. Facebook, Twitter & Instagram posts.
  • Additional duties as required.

 

Special Events and Development Assistant

Reporting: This summer position will report to the Director of Development and Promotion

Description: The student(s) filling this position will learn valuable lessons in special event planning, promotion and implementation as they pertain to a charitable organization. They will assist staff in the planning and running of these events that are vital to the success of Hydrocephalus Canada.

Students will also be presented with unique opportunities to learn about fund development, sponsorship, as well as methods and practices of stewardship - how we develop and support our relationships with donors at all levels. These activities will form the basis of ongoing initiatives with the goal of providing a sustainable base from which Hydrocephalus Canada can continue to offer our programs and services for those in need.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Students will be familiarized with existing fund development, sponsorship, and stewardship strategies and initiatives. These include special events, direct mail, corporate support etc.
  • Assist with the planning and running of special events such as the Spirit Wheel Walk Run, Annual Golf Challenge.
  • Assist the Director of Development and Promotion with planning, preparing and distributing a direct mail campaign letter.
  • Learn about and assist with the initiatives that provide support to our donors.
  • Provide input and assist with the development of the 2017/18 Annual Report and Fall issue of Current magazine.
  • Contribute to the production of e-newsletters and online appeals to donors.
  • Assist with social media and communications planning.
  • Students will familiarize themselves with existing communications, marketing and social media schedules, strategies and initiatives.
  • Assist with the development and posting of social media content and communications planning.
  • Assist staff with social media outreach related to special events.
  • Research new avenues for engaging donors and corporate support for the work of the Association.
  • Assist with Community Engagement and Events related to Awareness Month in June
  • Other duties as required.

Meet our May artist, Isaac Heroux from Kingston

Isaac is a loveable and affectionate, two-and-a-half-year-old. He has a twin brother named Nathan.

Isaac was born with Spina Bifida at his L5-S1 vertebra and he also has hydrocephalus. He loves animals, tractors and diggers, along with going swimming and interacting with new people and making everyone smile.

I go walking.

2. Why do you like drawing/painting or taking pictures?

I colour. I colour my feet

3. How did you feel when you heard your artwork was selected for the TGIF Calendar?

Good.

4. What are your hobbies and interests?

I go swimming. I see the cows.

5. What do you want to be when you grow up?

Fireman. I drive the truck.
